hot stone therapy

Introduced to Canada and the U.S. in the early 1990s, hot stone therapy dates back to the Ancient Egyptians. The Native Americans also used it at what were known as “sweat lodge” ceremonies to cleanse the body – physically and mentally. The stones used are typically basalt, which are a chalky-gray colour. When oil is applied to them, they turn dark. A therapist rubs the stones gently into tissues and muscles on both sides of the body.

Today, hot stone therapy is often recommended for people suffering with fibromyalgia because the penetrating effect enables a therapist to massage without having to apply excessive pressure. It is also very helpful in alleviating muscle restrictions after orthopaedic surgery. Cold and hot stones are especially effective when treating over-use injuries or sports injuries, as well as for the relief of menstrual cramps.

When performed by a massage therapist, hot stone therapy can help relax your body’s soft tissues and muscles, improve circulation, relieve pain, and help eliminate toxins. This type of massage treatment also promotes calmness, reduces stress and increases relaxation. Many believers in it claim that they experience a sense of inner peace, renewed spirituality and enlightenment after a session.

Although there are no side effects, if you are pregnant or have a medical condition, check with your doctor before having this therapy.
